Austria Eggenburg Charnel

The Austrian Eggenburg Charnel contains the bones of 5,800 people; we arrived to the viewing window and looked down upon the beautifully arranged bones, like looking at a mystical cave made of human remains. The charnel was constructed in the 14th century and the remains are so fragile that the charnel can only be viewed from behind a plastic screen. It is a magnificent site with the focal point being a huge pile of staged skulls in the center of the charnel.
