Cambodia Choeung Ek Killing Fields

In Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge lead by Pol Pot used terrible regimes and radical programs to try and cleanse the Cambodian people. They tortured and killed anyone that had connections with the old government, professionals and intellects, ethnic Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Christians, Catholics, Muslims, Buddhist monks and former urban dwellers amongst others. The death toll of this genocide reached millions, with perhaps even as many as three million people killed. The killing fields of Choeung Ek are where thousands of people were killed by the Khmer Rouge between 1975 and 1978 after the Cambodian Civil War. Children and infants were not spared because in Pol Pot’s opinion, they too would grow up like their parents. A memorial now stands filled with skulls of the victims. The mass graves, still with bones scattered and poking out of the soil, are left for visitors to see as a reminder of this horrific time.
