Germany Altes Larger

On our 12 days road trip around Eastern Europe for my book Soviet Ghosts, myself, Ian, Danny and Michael went to this pilot school in Germany, for me it was all about finding the Soviet mural and getting a photo of it.
Built in 1870 by the Prussians, this military base would pass through the hands of many regimes to come. It served as a pilot training airfield during World War II, rebuilt at the orders of the German army. During this time it was developed in order to teach piloting skills, before growing into a fully-fledged military airfield. Following the war, in 1945, it was taken over by the Soviet army who stationed large squadrons of their air force at the site. When the Soviets eventually left, the base itself was abandoned in 1994.
