Indonesia Sidoarjo Mud Flow

I arrived at the site of Sidoarjo in East Java in Indonesia and walked across a muddy wasteland viewing statues swallowed by the mud. They had been placed as a memorial to the devastation caused by a mudflow eruption that killed 20 people and left over 40,000 homeless. The mud volcano has been erupting since May 2006 and there is debate as to whether this is the result of an earthquake or caused by the drilling of natural gas. The haunting statues now stand as a reminder of the tragedy and will also be consumed by the mud as it continues to flow.
