Philippines Sagada Hanging Coffins

I travelled by bus and jeepney to a mystical place in the far North of the Philippines, called Sagada. It took me days to reach. I stayed in a wooden hut and it was an incredible experience. My aim was to see the Hanging Coffins; coffins placed high up on the rocks by the Igorot tribe in a long practised tradition where they nailed the coffins to the cliff face. The belief is that hanging them higher and off the ground brought them close to their ancestors. In addition, some people feared being buried on the ground as animals would eat their bodies, and headhunters would often take home the heads of their enemies so the Igorot placed the coffins high up, out of reach.
