Thailand Wat Mahathat

80km from Bangkok is the ancient capital of Ayutthaya. Full of ruined palaces and temples, it existed from 1350 to 1767 and was brought to an end during the Burmese Siamese War of 1765 to 1767. The area has a dark history as the Burmese attacked and massacred the cities’ temples. The city fell on April 7th 1767. Thousands died and those that survived later starved to death. The site of Wat Mahathat suffered the worst from the invasion; statues of Buddha’s were broken and although many monks tried to fix them after the invasion, one Buddha head fell by a tree and is now encased in its roots. The massacre had been horrific I wandered around the site with headless statues everywhere and imagined the brutal war that had happened there.
