UK Mermaid Inn

The Mermaid Inn in Rye, East Sussex has a history dating back to 1420. It is built with accompaniments in Tudor style. It is known as one of the most haunted hotels in the UK, with various sighted ghosts that reside within its walls and it has been investigated by the TV series ‘Most Haunted Live’. There are stories of a lady in white or grey sitting on a chair by a fireplace in one room, a male ghost that walks through the wall of the bathroom and main room, a duel between two ghosts where one man is killed and dragged though a trap door, another room where the ghost of a gang member haunts a rocking chair which was later removed as it spooked guests, and an old man who scared guests by sitting on the end of their bed. I spent a night in one room and it felt very creepy. I didn’t see any ghosts but my father who had stayed in another of the rooms had said that late in the night he had got up to go to the toilet and looked out of the window to see many maidens dressed in white sat at the tables outside.
